Sodium Description
Sodium - Sodium is
also known as salt. Sodium will act as a maintainer of the balance
of water on either side of the cellular membranes. This happens
throughout the body and is essential in achieving the stasis between
water and blood pH. Sodium is necessary for digestion as it aids the
muscles in the stomach and duodenum. Sodium works most often in
tandem with the mineral Potassium.
Proper Sodium levels will prevent dehydration. The older practice of
taking salt tablets in high heat periods while working is no longer
recommended.
Sodium, like
any supplement, can be overdone. Too much intake of this mineral can
cause dizziness, extreme high blood pressure, stupor, and can cause
the body to retain too much water. Some high blood pressure patients
will be prescribed a water pill which may lead to a Sodium
deficiency. It is widely known that a long term imbalance of Sodium
and Potassium can lead to serious heart disease.
